Introducing Our Bands for 2026:
Zappatistas
The Zappatistas are: John Etheridge (guitar); Annie Whitehead (trombone); Paul Jayasinha (trumpet); Simon Bates (sax); Steve Lodder (keys); Rob Statham (bass); and Mike Bradley (drums).
They started as a commission from Nottinghamshire County Council when John was asked to put together a band for a one-off performance at the Newark Festival in October 1998. The enthusiasm and success of the performance convinced the band to take the show to further audiences. In 2000, they were featured on BBC Radio 3's Jazz Notes, and the following year released the album The Music Of Frank Zappa Absolutely Live on the Jazzprint label.
They can also be heard on the two Idiot-compiled albums, Zappanale 17 (Arf Society, 2006) and Weasels Re-Ripped (Cordelia Records, 2015).
As well as Zappanale, they played MOO-AH in 2015. Most years they can be seen at the PizzaExpress Jazz Club in Soho when John hosts a multi-night residency there.
In 2013, Steve and Annie were part of the rock band - alongside Scott Thunes and Joe Travers - that performed 200 Motels - The Suites with the BBC Concert Orchestra at London's Royal Festival Hall.
At MOO-AH, expect explosive and anarchic non-stop acid-drenched free jazz, frisky reggae and greasy funk.
